Details | Despite the massive number of English loanwords in the Japanese language, there is little exploitation of this potential vocabulary resource in educational practices in Japan. Indeed, a bias against gairaigo (foreign words) has been identified both in society and the classroom, primarily fostered by references to English seen in the field of advertising. This bias has important implications for English language education in Japan and it is suggested here that a reconceptualisation of the pedagogical value of English gairaigo is both timely and necessary. |
