Details Israeli PM Begin destroyed Iraqi nuclear reactor by a surprise air attack in 1981, with the declaration of "Begin Doctrine", which intended to virtually monopolize nuclear weapons in Mideast by the Jewish state. The US President Reagan was repeatedly surprised by Begin's hardline policies from the bombing to the declarations of Jerusalem being the capital of Israel and the annexiation of the Syrian Golan Height. Regan even joined the international condemnations against Israel. However Reagan, an evangelical Christian, had a strong attachment to Holy Jerusalem and the Jewish people. He gradually developed American strategic alliance with Israel.
