Details | This presentation attempts to explicate entity coherence of discourse and its effect on pronominalization in the framework of Centering Theory (Grosz, Joshi and Weinstein 1995). We conducted a survey with native speakers (NS) of English and Japanese and examined in the survey result, (1) how centering prediction is reflected in human intuitive judgments on pronominalization and (2) how NS judgments differ across the languages. The result showed that decisions on pronominalization are reasonably compatible with centering predictions. |
