概要	Two colonial styelid ascidians of Syncarpa are known from the northwest Pacific. The status of S. composita (Tokioka, 1951; type locality: Akkeshi, Japan) was reassessed by comparing a syntype and newly collected topotypes with a syntype of S. oviformis Redikorzev, 1913 (Ul’banskij Bay, Russia). Syncarpa composita consistently differed from S. oviformis in oral tentacle number, size-classes of transverse vessels, and anal lobe number. We redescribe S. composita as distinct and infer its phylogenetic position within Styelidae using 18S rRNA and COI sequences. Our phylogeny recovered Syncarpa as a well-supported clade with Dendrodoa MacLeay, 1824. Both genera possess a single right-sided gonad, a condition unique among Styelidae and likely representing a synapomorphy for this clade. 担当部分：筆頭・責任著者として全頁を執筆した。
