概要	This article uses the framework of Optimality Theory (OT) in an attempt to show how the ranking of markedness and faithfulness constraints in Japanese has changed between Old and Modern Japanese in order to create the alternations seen in Modern Japanese verb forms containing the past suffix /ta/. It also contains a primer for readers unfamiliar with the fundamentals of OT.
