概要 | Transparent bodies are found across diverse taxa, yet how transparency has been evolutionarily acquired and by what molecular mechanisms it is maintained remain unclear. In this study, we focused on ascidian eggs to investigate the transparency of marine invertebrates. We isolated eggs from 21 individuals out of 99 ascidian specimens collected in Japan. The transparency spectra (380–1000 nm) of these eggs were measured using a hyperspectral camera, and changes in egg transparency during evolution were examined through molecular phylogenetic analysis. Our results showed that eggs of the family Ascidiidae have retained high transparency. Notably, eggs of Ascidia aspersa exhibited 90% transparency—comparable to window glass—and this transparency was maintained even during larval development. Such a high degree of transparency may serve to deceive predators.
