| 概要 | Morphological studies encounter difficulties when a derivative exists but its supposed base does not. English has relational adjectives (RAdjs), a kind of attributive-only denominal adjective, which appear to be derived from neoclassical dvandva compounds. Such RAdjs are problematic because dvandvas themselves are typologically unavailable in English. For example, gastrointestinal appears to have the neoclassical dvandva compound *gastrointestine as its base, but this base is ungrammatical. This paper aims to shed light on the intriguing process behind the formation of such problematic RAdjs based on Nagano (2013, 2015), where ordinary RAdjs (e.g., presidential plane) are analyzed as a prenominal realization form of the PP (e.g., plane of the president) for direct modification. This paper proposes that neoclassical RAdjs also have a PP as an underlying structure.
