| 概要 | This paper investigates the multifunctionality of the English suffix -ed. While traditionally categorised into three roles (verbal inflection, deverbal adjectival participles, and inalienable possessional modifiers, we identify a previously unclassified fourth type: denominal adjectival -ed (e.g., frequently husbanded 'having multiple husbands', well fished 'containing many fish'). Unlike deverbal forms, this new category derives directly from nouns. We demonstrate that these forms are distinct from known possessional modifiers. Using Lieber’s Lexical Semantic Framework (LSF), the paper provides a compositional analysis of the word-formation process. This approach accounts for the suffix’s multifunctionality without relying on the concept of a morphome, offering a more comprehensive understanding of how -ed functions within English morphology.
