| 概要 | Animal responses to dead conspecifics remain poorly understood. We used camera traps to record three wild boars (Sus scrofa) visiting the carcass of an adult female conspecific during decomposition in Nikko City, Japan. An adult male mounted the carcass and continued to show non-feeding interest for approximately 17 days, including stepping on and resting near it. No individuals consumed soft tissues. These observations provide rare evidence of necrophilic behavior in a terrestrial mammal and suggest that carcass monitoring can reveal behavioral responses beyond carrion feeding. |
