概要 | An unidentified colonial ascidian known as gaikotsu-panda-hoya ('skeleton panda ascidian') has drawn attention among SCUBA divers since its strange appearence was introduced online from Kumejima Island, Japan. To clarify its taxonomic status, fresh specimens were collected off Kumejima. Morphological examination confirmed that they represent a new species, described here as Clavelina ossipandae sp. nov. It is distinguished from congeners by the following features: free zooids up to 20 mm; transparent body with a white patch between oral and atrial siphons; four black markings, one between siphons, one mid-dorsally, and a lateral pair; white transverse vessels; black endostyle; 10–14 stigmatal rows; and two longitudinal muscular bands from abdomen to endostyle. Phylogenetic analysis supported inclusion within Clavelina.
