Details The purpose of this study was to explore what factors influenced first-year English-major students' TOEIC scores. The survey was administered to 121 first-year students at our university. The questionnaire was designed to include a variety of items such as how they entered the university, students' motivations and beliefs, and out-of-class study time. Multiple regression analyses revealed that two factors stood out in their effect on students’ TOEIC scores: whether or not they were planning to study abroad, and their confidence in their ability as English learners.
