Responsible for Utilizing remote simultaneous interpreting data for interpreting quality assessment: A corpus- based study
Author and coauthor Masaru Yamada, Kayo Matsushita, Hiroyuki Ishizuka
Details This study explores the creation and analysis of a Remote Simultaneous Interpreting (RSI) corpus for English-Japanese language pairs. Utilizing a scalable data collection method, a team of 12 professional interpreters interpreted a press conference, enabling a comparison of onsite and RSI interpretations. Following data collection, the study involved transcription and bilingual data alignment using a customized Vecalign algorithm for accuracy, particularly between English and Japanese texts. Overcoming initial challenges with automatic sentence alignment, the study generated a dataset suitable for diverse analyses. It critically assessed the Multidimensional Quality Metrics (MQM) for interpreting performance, revealing that while comprehensive, MQM may not fully capture the nuances of simultaneous interpreting. The study identified a notable percentage of accuracy errors, emphasizing the need for more tailored evaluation criteria.
