Details | This study analyses a recorded simultaneous interpreting performance to explore the status of mental representations constructed by a simultaneous interpreter, drawing on the model of conceptual complexes (the CC model) (e.g. Funayama 2007, Ishizuka 2012). A CC is a descriptive device of the hearer’s mental operations during the incremental process of discourse processing. As a hearer of the source speaker, the interpreter constructs CCs as non-linguistic representations. CCs are involved in two stages of the interpreting process: comprehension of the source text (ST) and production of the target text (TT). This study focuses on referential expressions in the TT that have no corresponding expressions in the ST. This type of translation in interpreting performances reveals that interpreting is not simply code switching from ST to TT, but a process that entails non-linguistic cognitive operations. Based on such clues, the role of CCs as information units is examined. |
