Details | This thesis attempts a comprehensive description of the language of Samuel Johnson's (1709-1784) private letters, using corpus linguistics methods. By examining the language of a leading 18th-century English writer, espeicailly the language of his letters in detail, which is supposed to be close to everyday language, the thesis investigates the reality of the linguistic situation at the time. The overall structure consists of an introduction, seven main chapters (including a conclusion) and an appendix. The present study of the language of Johnson's letters in terms of spelling, vocabulary and grammar, using the methods of corpus linguistics and the findings of philology would be a significant contribution to the scholarly community. |
