Details This paper attempts to investigate how language behaviors observable in contact-situation interactions and the intentions behind such behaviors are interrelated. For that purpose, we first analyze: (1) two sets of video-recorded three-person conversation data in a pseudo multicultural co-learning setting and (2) remarks made by the conversation participants in their follow-up interviews. In the analysis, the focus is on the L1 Japanese speakers’ behaviors by which Japanese learners are confused. Particular attention is given to the cases in which deviations from sociolinguistic and sociocultural norms are noted and negatively evaluated by Japanese learners. We then examine the norms employed respectively by L1 speakers and learners in those cases. The discrepancy between L1 speakers’ intention and learners’ confusion is presented as potential resource for deeper learning and pedagogical implications for multicultural co-learning practice.
