Details This paper shows that the availability of the pragmatic information in the lexicon also accounts for the difference in the availability of similitudinal N-A compounds (e.g., crystal-clear (= extremely clear)) between English and Japanese. In addition, this paper points out that the difference in the use of pragmatic information can be observed not only in phrase- and word-level phenomena but also in sentential or clausal phenomena. Based on this observation, this paper argues that such differences can be regarded as instantiations of the fundamental characteristics of the two languages proposed by Hirose (1995, 2000) and his subsequent works.
