概要 | Depending on our personality and our “home culture”, it may be difficult to disagree, criticize someone, and give advice even in our native language. On the other hand, some people do not hesitate in disagreeing flatly, criticizing directly, and giving advice forcefully, in whatever language, but may find that it does not help them win friends and influence people. For learners of English, confusion about whether or how to express disagreement or criticism, and how to give advice may be exacerbated by a general belief that in English (especially American English) directness and honesty are valued above all, which may either result in learners feeling unable to express any disagreement, criticism, or advice, or in doing these things in ways that alienate the people around them. |
