| 概要 | Atypicality in derivational morphology is exemplified by unprofitable but still available affixes like the English prefix be-. Historically, be- is known for deriving transitive verbs from various base categories (Bauer et al. 2013). However, in Present-day English, be- occurs chiefly on adjectival passives, as in [be-X-ed], and it is productive only when it introduces an intensive (e.g., ‘excess’) meaning to its bases (cf. OED; Marchand 1969) (e.g., bepilgrimed ‘overrun with pilgrims’). In this study, we explore the actual status of be- by investigating large-scale corpora data and offer a lexicalist analysis of its behaviour. |
