概要 | This study explores the geographic and intergenerational diversity facilitated by virtual Japanese language learning for adults, focusing on the technological aspects that benefit Japanese student volunteers. Online education, powered by advanced communication technologies, allows language learners and volunteer partners from diverse regions and age groups to connect. This study focuses on Japanese university students who volunteer as conversation partners for adult learners enrolled in a tech-enabled online Japanese course offered by the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Through these platforms, adult learners gain authentic language practice with Japanese speakers and insights into contemporary Japanese culture and language use. By interacting with learners from diverse backgrounds and life stages, volunteers enhance their intercultural communication skills while overcoming the limitations of digital learning environments, deepen their understanding of Japanese as a "glocal lingua franca," and foster cultural exchanges that transcend traditional boundaries. The study underscores the mutual benefits of these partnerships, emphasizing their impact on volunteers' personal growth and readiness for a multicultural society. The findings provide valuable insights for curriculum development aimed at enhancing intercultural competence in an increasingly diversifying tech-driven world. |
