Details | This paper will discuss research which replaces data gained through researcher/participant introspection with that gained through empirical observation. Using two related web-based corpora of over 10 billion words each (accessed through the Sketch Engine), results will be shown of a comparative collocation analysis of a selection of loanwords which have high frequency in both English and Japanese. For each language, a set of collocations with the highest ranking (based on the LogDice association measure) were categorised and compared to search for lexical semantic modifications. The findings from the corpus-based analysis allow a theory of lexical borrowing to be derived from the empirical data, rather than from intuition. As well as the research findings, this paper will outline the methodological steps involved in conducting the collocation analysis. |
