Details This paper presents a study designed to address the limitations in previous studies which investigated the impact on reading rate development of two treatments – ER and grammar translation. In the experimental design of this quantitative study, Japanese university freshmen (N = 50) were randomly assigned to one of two treatment groups. Research questions to be answered were:
1. Are post-treatment reading rates significantly higher than pre-treatment reading rates for the two groups? Which facilitated greater gains?
2. If reading rates increased, did participants maintain adequate comprehension rates?
