概要 Whilst the concept of learner autonomy has come to the forefront in recent years, many foreign language learners may see occasions for using the target language beyond the classroom as limited. However, rather than a lack of opportunities, there may be a lack of initiative or confidence to identify and make use of potential chances for target language practice. Grow's (1998) seminal paper on the stages of self-directed learning helps inform the understanding of this varied uptake and ability to thrive in less directed learning environments. Within his idealised model, students advance from dependent to self-directed learners while the instructors work to foster the optimal conditions in which the self-directed learning is to take place. This presentation explores ways in which teachers can offer support for language learners seeking to supplement their classes and homework with independent learning. Focusing on the journey of one English department Freshman student in particular, we report on developments in our understanding of the resources for independent learning available to our students, perceived or actual barriers to exploiting them, and of the teacher's various roles in helping students become more self-directed learners.
